MARTINSVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — Five people were displaced and a pet was rescued in a house fire on Monday, according to Martinsville Fire and EMS.
Crews were dispatched around 12:30 p.m. to a structure fire in the 700 block of Indian Trail.
Martinsville Fire and EMS A-shift Assistant Fire Chief John Kaczor told rbs news now at the scene that the fire was likely caused by an extension cord plugged into an outlet, though the incident remains under investigation.
Kaczor reminded residents to use extension cords only as directed and to be cautious when plugging them into wall outlets to avoid the risk of fire.

Fire damage was largely contained to the living room, he said, but smoke and water affected the entire structure.
Five people were displaced by the fire and were being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Firefighters also rescued a pet from inside the home during the response.
Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department, Dyers Store Volunteer Fire Department, Henry County Public Safety and Martinsville Public Works assisted at the scene.
