ORIGINAL STORY — February 19

PATRICK COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A child and an adult suffered severe burns in a mobile home fire Thursday morning in Patrick County, according to the Patrick Springs Volunteer Fire Department.

The department said crews were dispatched around 7:45 a.m. to Bowling Drive for a structure fire in their first-due area.

A crew of four, including Chief 23, was at the station and preparing to respond in Engine 23 when a vehicle pulled into the station in front of the apparatus bay.

Fire officials said a woman got out of the vehicle with her child, who had sustained severe burns over her body.

The mother had driven from the scene of the fire to the station seeking help.

Engine 23’s crew immediately began treating the child.

Chief 23 requested EMS to respond to the station and asked for an air ambulance.

Additional members arrived shortly after, and the deputy chief and assistant chief took over patient care while Engine 23 responded to the fire scene.

Patrick County EMS transported the child to Stuart Community Hospital.

The child was later flown to another hospital for further treatment.

When Engine 23 arrived at the scene, crews found a working mobile home fire and a male patient with severe burns.

Chief 23 established command, and a second air ambulance was requested.

Station 3, Jeb Stuart Rescue, took over care of the adult patient.

Firefighters also received reports of additional children trapped inside the home.

Crews stretched a hand line and began fire attack and search operations.

The fire was quickly knocked down, and all searches were negative.

Officials said all other occupants made it out of the home.

Additional assistance was provided by Companies 26 (Town of Stuart), 28 (Moorefield Store), 14 (Patrick-Henry) and 27 (Fairystone), which responded with tankers and personnel.

The fire department said it shared details of the incident to ask for prayers for the child and family.

The cause of the fire has not been released.
