BASSETT, Va. (rbs news now) — A man has been arrested in connection with a shooting outside a bowling alley after he barricaded himself in an attic at a Bassett home Friday night.

Deputies located Casey Dakota Vernon, 32, of Elm Street in Bassett, in the 500 block of Blackberry Road, where he briefly barricaded himself inside a residence before being found hiding in an attic.

A sheriff’s office K9 assisted deputies in safely locating and taking Vernon into custody without further incident.

The arrest stems from the investigation into the early morning shooting in the parking lot of Sportlanes in which one individual sustained a single gunshot wound to the leg.

The victim was transported from Sovah Health in Martinsville to another medical facility for additional treatment.

Authorities have said the injury is believed to be non-life-threatening.

Vernon is charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and reckless handling of a firearm.

He is being held without bond at the Henry County Adult Detention Center.

The investigation remains ongoing.

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A male was injured in a shooting early Friday morning at Sportslanes in Henry County.

Authorities got the call at around 12:15 a.m. Feb. 20 reporting shots fired at the bowling alley, located at 10 Koehler Road.

Deputies said they responded and found evidence indicating shots had been fired.

A short time later, a male arrived at Sovah Health in Martinsville with a single gunshot wound to the leg.

The male was later transferred to another medical facility for additional treatment.

Authorities said the injury is believed to be non-life-threatening.

Investigators processed the scene and interviewed multiple witnesses who were inside the bowling alley at the time.

Preliminary findings indicate the shooting occurred outside in the parking lot and appears to be an isolated incident, according to authorities.

The Martinsville Police Department and the Virginia State Police assisted with the investigation.

Investigators said they have identified a person of interest, but the name is not being released due to the ongoing investigation.
