FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office has welcomed Sergeant Morgan Moorman as the agency’s first female K9 handler.

Sergeant Moorman will partner with K9 Shebang, a 16-month-old yellow Labrador retriever trained in electronic scent detection and therapy services.

K9 Shebang, donated by O.U.R. Rescue—a nonprofit organization dedicated to combating child exploitation and trafficking—has been trained by Jordan Detection K9.

Her specialized abilities include detecting electronic storage devices that may contain evidence in criminal cases, particularly those involving child exploitation, according to authorities.

Moorman recently completed a two-week handler training course with Jordan Detection K9 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Sergeant Moorman, who joined the sheriff’s office in 2018, serves as the Sergeant of the Criminal Investigations Division.

The department said the addition of K9 Shebang is a significant advancement in their efforts to combat crime, particularly in safeguarding children and prosecuting exploitation cases.

K9 Shebang will also assist other local jurisdictions when needed.

“We are proud to make agency history with Sergeant Moorman as our first female K9 handler and excited to have K9 Shebang as a vital resource in ensuring justice and safety for all,” the department stated.
