HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — An 18-year-old student at Bassett High School was arrested on November 20 for bringing a firearm to the school.

The incident came to light around 9:45 a.m. when a student self-reported the presence of the firearm to school officials.

A school resource officer (SRO) found the handgun outside the school building.

The student, Charles Edward Mills, was taken into custody by the SRO and charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

Mills was released on a $3,000 unsecured bond.

Authorities said no threats were made toward the school or individuals, and the school continued its regular schedule.

“Incidents of this nature heighten concerns for student safety,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “The Henry County Sheriff’s Office and Henry County Public Schools are committed to taking every safety concern seriously and responding swiftly to ensure the security of students and staff.”

Officials asked students, parents, and community members to report any suspicious activity or safety concerns to maintain a secure school environment.
