SPENCER, Va. (rbs news now) — A fox discovered in the Spencer area of Patrick County has tested positive for rabies.
According to the Virginia Department of Health, the fox was found on June 16 in the 500 block of Virginia North Carolina Road.
The animal tested positive for the rabies virus, which can be transmitted to humans and pets through bites, scratches, or contact with saliva through open wounds or mucous membranes.
Health officials are urging anyone who may have had contact with the fox to immediately call the Patrick County Health Department at 276-693-2070.
Direct contact between the fox and domestic pets should also be reported to Patrick County Animal Control at 276-694-3161.
“This incident is a reminder that rabies is present in Virginia wildlife,” officials said in a statement. “Bats, raccoons, foxes and skunks are common carriers and can sometimes infect domestic animals such as dogs and cats.”
Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the nervous system and is nearly always fatal without timely medical intervention.
The West Piedmont Health District issued several safety guidelines following the incident:
- Report all animal bites or exposures immediately and seek prompt medical attention.
- Avoid contact with wild animals and report any ill or injured stray animals to local authorities.
- Ensure pets and livestock are confined to your property and are current on rabies vaccinations. Virginia law requires rabies vaccinations for all dogs and cats over four months old.
- Secure trash containers to avoid attracting wildlife.
Anyone who is bitten or scratched by a wild or stray animal is advised to thoroughly wash the wound with warm, soapy water and contact their healthcare provider, animal control, or the health department.
