ORIGINAL STORY — August 3

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — An 18-year-old woman was airlifted to the hospital early Sunday morning after being shot during her birthday party in Henry County.

Deputies were dispatched around 1:50 a.m. on August 3 to the area of Old Chatham Road and Clearview Drive after reports of multiple gunshots.

Shortly after, the victim arrived at SOVAH Health in Martinsville by private vehicle and was later flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for advanced care.

Deputies returned to the scene on Sunday evening to execute a search warrant at the residence where the party occurred.

Sheriff Wayne Davis said that investigators believe at least one of the firearms used in the shooting came from inside that home.

“This was her 18th birthday party,” Sheriff Davis said. “A dispute spilled out into the highway where unfortunately the young lady was shot.”

According to Davis, the incident involved multiple shooters and a large number of attendees.

“There were literally dozens of rounds fired here at this party,” he said. “Thankfully, by the grace of God, only one person was hit.”

The sheriff said they have identified several persons of interest but have not yet made any arrests.

“We do have three individuals who we are currently seeking and/or interviewing,” Sheriff Davis said. “We believe one or more of them are not even from the Martinsville–Henry County area.”

Despite some cooperation from witnesses, Davis said many people at the party have not come forward.

“There have been some individuals who cooperated with this investigation. However, we know there are many other people who would be a witness to this crime who have not cooperated whatsoever,” Davis said. “We’re trying to help this young lady out who was shot here… So please do the right thing.”

Anyone with information about the incident should call the Henry County Sheriff’s Office at 276-638-8751 or Crimestoppers at 276-632-7463.
