HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — Students at Meadow View Elementary School were relocated Tuesday after a potential natural gas leak was reported at the campus, according to Henry County Public Schools (HCPS) officials.

Tameia Easley, communications and compliance officer for HCPS, said division leadership is working with emergency personnel and shared the statement that was sent to families.

“A potential security concern in the form of a natural gas leak has been reported at Meadow View Elementary,” the school’s principal, Anthony Swann, wrote in a message sent to families. “At this time, school officials, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, and other public safety agencies are working together to assess the situation.”

As a precaution, students were transported to Bassett High School, Swann said.

Parents and guardians were advised not to report to Bassett High School until notified through ParentSquare.

Once checkout begins, all individuals will be required to present photo identification, and students will only be released to those listed on the approved pickup and emergency contact lists in PowerSchool, according to Swann.

“Please note that currently, phone lines are being utilized to communicate with emergency officials,” Swann said, adding that staff members’ first priority is the safety and care of students.

Easley told rbs news now that division leadership is continuing to manage the situation.

“Members of division leadership are currently in the midst of handling the situation in coordination with emergency personnel and are not available for additional comment at this time,” she said. “Should that change, appropriate updates will be shared.”
