HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A former Henry County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been charged with misdemeanor assault and battery following an investigation into an incident that occurred outside the Henry County Adult Detention Center late last year.

According to a May 21 news release from the sheriff’s office, former deputy Michael Kevin Cagle Jr. responded to a breaking and entering in progress call on Nov. 26, 2025.

Authorities said an individual was arrested on charges related to breaking and entering as well as an outstanding felony warrant and was transported to the Henry County Adult Detention Center.

Before the individual was escorted inside the jail, a verbal altercation reportedly occurred between Cagle and the arrestee, which escalated into Cagle using force against the individual, according to the release.

No injuries were reported.

The sheriff’s office said supervisors were notified moments later and began reviewing the incident.

An internal investigation determined Cagle violated multiple agency policies, resulting in his termination from the department effective immediately.

Sheriff Wayne Davis then requested an independent investigation by the Virginia State Police and the Henry County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

Following the investigation, Cagle was charged with one count of assault and battery, a misdemeanor offense.

Authorities said Cagle was arrested May 18 in Goldsboro and is being held without bond pending extradition to Virginia.

In the release, Davis said the sheriff’s office remains committed to transparency, accountability and maintaining public trust.

“While any allegation of misconduct involving a law enforcement officer is concerning, the actions taken in this case demonstrate this administration’s commitment to addressing such matters swiftly, professionally, and appropriately,” the sheriff’s office stated.
