PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents in the Berry Hill Road area to be on the lookout as deputies search for an armed and dangerous man.

Authorities issued an updated emergency alert clarifying that an earlier notification was mistakenly sent to a larger area than intended.

The sheriff’s office said the alert specifically applies to the area around the 1000 block of Berry Hill Road.

According to the sheriff’s office, the individual is described as a white male in his mid-40s, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing about 140 pounds.

He was last seen wearing a gray shirt, blue jeans and carrying a backpack.

Authorities also said the man has tattoos.

The sheriff’s office warned that the individual should be considered armed and dangerous.

Residents are urged not to approach the man if he is seen.

Instead, anyone who spots an individual matching the description should immediately call 9-1-1.

No additional information about the incident that prompted the alert has been released.
