BASSETT, Va. (rbs news now) — A man is facing multiple charges after a domestic disturbance led to a standoff on Pritt Place Lane in Bassett on July 15.

Deputies were called a reported domestic disturbance and they said they encountered a female victim who reported she had been physically assaulted and prevented from leaving the residence during the incident.

Authorities said the suspect went inside the home and refused repeated commands to come outside.

During the investigation, deputies learned the suspect had access to a firearm.

Members of the Henry County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiations Team were then called to the scene.

Crisis negotiators established communication with the suspect and worked to peacefully resolve the situation.

After about an hour, the suspect voluntarily exited the residence and surrendered to law enforcement without incident.

Following the investigation, deputies arrested Samuel Wilson Draper and charged him with assault and battery against a family or household member, abduction and obstruction of justice.

Draper was transported to the Henry County Adult Detention Center, where a magistrate ordered him held without bond.

The investigation remains ongoing.

BASSETT, Va. (rbs news now) — A man was taken into custody after a barricade situation at a residence on Pritt Place Lane in Bassett that began as a reported domestic incident.

Henry County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division Capt. Tim Compton told rbs news now that deputies were dispatched just before 12 a.m. on July 15 after 9-1-1 received a report of a domestic altercation between a man and a woman.

When deputies arrived, they found the woman outside the home while the man ran back inside the residence.

Initial reports indicated the man may have been armed, leading to a large law enforcement response, including the Henry County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, the Virginia State Police and the Henry County Department of Public Safety.

After investigating, authorities determined the man did not have a firearm.

However, Compton said the suspect made multiple threats toward law enforcement while inside the home, leading officers to establish a perimeter and attempt to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion.

“After a brief standoff, the individual did come out willingly and surrendered, and we took him into custody,” Compton said. “That’s what we always want in these situations. It’s a very dangerous situation, and we want the officers and everyone involved in this to go home at the end of the night — not just for us, but also for the suspect himself. We want to resolve this in a peaceful manner, and luckily we were able to do that tonight.”

The suspect is expected to face charges.

The investigation remains ongoing.
