DANVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — A 1-year-old girl was shot early Monday after multiple people opened fire toward a group in the breezeway of a Danville apartment complex, police said.

The Danville Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting multiple shots fired and a child struck by gunfire at approximately 1:23 a.m. Sept. 7 at the G building of the Purdum Woods apartment complex on Richmond Boulevard.

Officers found the 1-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound to her lower body.

Officers and first responders provided immediate medical attention before she was airlifted to a trauma facility.

The child was listed in stable condition, police said.

Investigators determined that at approximately 1:21 a.m., multiple individuals fired shots toward a group standing in the G building breezeway in what appeared to be a targeted attack, according to police.

Gunfire was also returned from the breezeway.

Police said the child was being held by her mother when she was struck while standing in the breezeway.

The suspects fled the area on foot.

Two apartments in the G building were struck by gunfire, police said.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Danville police are asking anyone with information or surveillance footage from the area to contact the department.

Investigators are particularly interested in footage from areas between Purdum Road, Bradley Road and side streets leading toward North Main Street.
