HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A man was arrested after a standoff lasting over two hours in Henry County.

It happened around 9 p.m. on Wedgewood Road near Spartan Circle in the Ridgeway community on September 8.

Sheriff Wayne Davis said the incident began when the suspect, 33-year-old Ethan St Claire Harr, of Eggleston Falls Road, Ridgeway, brandished a gun at family members and threatened to harm them and himself.

The family was able to safely leave the house, and Harr barricaded himself inside with the gun, family members told authorities.

Patrol deputies got to the home and say they tried to contact him using the PA system in their vehicles, but he disregarded their attempts.

The SWAT team and crisis and hostage negotiators were called in to assist.

Negotiators communicated with Harr for
several hours before the SWAT team forced entry and peacefully resolved the situation, taking Harr into custody without incident.

He has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, obstruction of justice, and brandishing a firearm.

Harr is being held in the Henry County Adult Detention Center under no bond.

Sheriff Davis noted there were numerous dogs inside the residence, but no injuries were reported.

“This was a situation where a young man lived with his mother and father. There was alcohol involved. The situation flared, tempers got out of hand, and ultimately a firearm was produced,” Davis said.

The Martinsville Police Department and Virginia State Police assisted at the scene.
