ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. (rbs news now) — An inmate at the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility died July 7 after being found unresponsive in his cell during routine feeding.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, detention staff discovered the 39-year-old white male shortly before 6:30 a.m. and started life-saving measures while notifying emergency personnel.

Despite those efforts, the inmate was pronounced dead.

In accordance with protocol, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to conduct an independent investigation.

The inmate’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin and further investigation.

No additional details have been released at this time.
