HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — The Henry County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man following an investigation involving child sexual abuse material and the online exploitation of children.

According to the sheriff’s office, the investigation began after authorities received information through the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force regarding suspected online exploitation of children and the possession of child sexual abuse material.

Investigators said the information indicated apparent child sexual abuse material had been detected within an online account connected to the investigation.

Authorities then began working to identify the individual responsible and secure evidence related to the case.

On May 11, investigators obtained multiple warrants related to telephone numbers, IP addresses and an email account believed to be connected to the suspect.

The following day, investigators responded to a residence on Mount Olivet Road in Henry County and confirmed Joseph Lee Greer lived at the home.

Authorities later located Greer and served a search warrant for electronic devices capable of storing child sexual abuse material or accessing the internet, including cellular phones, computers, tablets, hard drives and removable storage devices.

According to the sheriff’s office, Greer voluntarily agreed to return to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office for questioning after the devices were recovered.

During the interview, investigators said Greer admitted to downloading known child sexual abuse material over a period of several years and acknowledged possessing the material on his device.

While the interview was taking place, investigators conducted a forensic examination of the cellular device and reportedly located multiple images depicting juveniles engaged in sexual acts.

Greer was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of possession of child sexual abuse material and nine counts of possession of child sexual abuse material, second or subsequent offense

Sheriff Wayne Davis said crimes against children are among the most disturbing offenses law enforcement investigates.

“The Henry County Sheriff’s Office has absolutely zero tolerance for child predators or anyone involved in the possession, distribution, or exploitation of Child Sexual Abuse Material,” Sheriff Davis said in the release. “Every image investigators recover represents a real child who has been victimized and exploited.”

Davis added that the sheriff’s office will continue using every available resource to identify offenders and protect children.

The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are possible as investigators continue examining electronic evidence seized during the case.
