Two Arrested After Drug Search Warrant Executed in Bassett

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — Two people were arrested after the Henry County Sheriff’s Office executed a narcotics-related search warrant Thursday night at a residence in Bassett.

The sheriff’s office SWAT team executed the warrant at around 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 13 at a residence in the 9100 block of Fairystone Park Highway.

According to the sheriff’s office, the investigation began after deputies received an increase in calls and complaints about suspected drug activity in the area, particularly near Brookshire Apartments.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office VICE division and narcotics interdiction unit began investigating the reported activity and developed evidence indicating meth was being distributed from the residence.

Four people — three men and one woman — were located and detained when investigators and the SWAT team arrived to execute the warrant.

Investigators seized suspected meth, drug paraphernalia consistent with narcotics distribution and a firearm during the search.

Investigators said they also found several electronic devices and other evidence that raised additional concerns unrelated to the original narcotics investigation.

One of the four people detained was identified as a registered sex offender.

The electronic devices were seized and will undergo forensic examination as investigators determine whether additional criminal offenses occurred.

Two people were arrested and charged.

Jeral Max Sunderland Jr., 62, is charged with possession of a schedule I/II drug and possession of a schedule I/II drug while possessing a firearm.

Sunderland is being held without bond.

Deidre Chaney Cox, 54, is charged with possession of a schedule I/II drug and possession of a schedule I/II drug while possessing a firearm.

Cox is also being held without bond.

The sheriff’s office said additional charges may be filed as investigators examine the seized evidence and conduct forensic examinations of the electronic devices.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office said information from the community remains important in identifying and addressing illegal activity throughout the county.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
