HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — Two Henry County Sheriff’s Office deputies have been terminated following separate arrests on alcohol-related driving and other charges in South Carolina and North Carolina, Sheriff Wayne Davis said Monday.

According to a media release issued Aug. 17, Deputy Christopher Michael Shaver was arrested July 23 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

He was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

Shaver was assigned to the corrections division at the Henry County Adult Detention Center and was off duty when the incident occurred.

Sheriff Davis said the sheriff’s office terminated Shaver within hours of being notified of the arrest.

The sheriff’s office has also taken action under applicable Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services requirements regarding decertification, according to Davis.

The second incident occurred Saturday night, Aug. 15, in Eden, North Carolina.

Deputy Homer Charles Jessee was arrested and charged with driving while impaired and assault and battery.

Jessee, who was also assigned to the adult detention center, was off duty at the time.

Sheriff Davis said Jessee was terminated after the sheriff’s office was notified of the arrest, and the agency has addressed the matter under applicable state decertification requirements.

The sheriff said employees of the sheriff’s office are expected to follow the law regardless of whether they are working.

“The citizens we serve have every right to expect those who work for the Sheriff’s Office to conduct themselves responsibly, both on and off duty,” Davis said. “Drinking and driving is dangerous, it is preventable, and it will not be tolerated within this organization. Our employees are not above the law, and when their conduct fails to meet the standards of this office, we will take appropriate action.”

Neither incident involved a county-owned vehicle or other county property, according to the Sheriff Davis.

Davis the incidents do not represent the conduct of the agency as a whole.

The criminal cases remain under the jurisdiction of the law enforcement agencies and courts where the arrests occurred.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office said it will allow those proceedings to continue while handling the employment matters separately under agency policy.

Booking photographs were not included in the release and the sheriff said they should be requested from the respective charging agencies.
