COLLINSVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — A Collinsville business owner says her family-owned store suffered thousands of dollars in losses after cashing several bad checks earlier this year, leading to felony indictments against a Roanoke man in Henry County Circuit Court.

Court documents obtained by rbs news now show that a Henry County grand jury indicted Rudin William Portillo, 32, of Roanoke, on multiple felony charges related to bad checks and obtaining money by false pretenses.

Nancy Castillo, owner of Tienda y Taqueria Mexicana El Morelense at 2381 N. Daniels Creek Road in Collinsville, told rbs news now that the situation had a significant impact on her business.

“As a small business, incidents like this affect us directly,” she said. “We had successfully cashed checks for this individual over a period of time, and the issues with the bad checks began only after we believe he became comfortable that we trusted he had sufficient funds available.”

Castillo said the total amount of checks cashed in Portillo’s name was approximately $5,100, not including fees charged per transaction.

She said the transactions occurred between January and February 2026 and involved some checks written in Portillo’s name and others in the name of a business she says no longer exists.

According to the indictments, Portillo is accused of uttering three checks of $1,000 or more while allegedly knowing there were insufficient funds available to cover them.

The grand jury also returned three felony indictments alleging Portillo obtained money or property valued at more than $1,000 by false pretenses.

The charges include three counts of uttering a bad check of $1,000 or more with intent to defraud and three counts of obtaining money or property valued at more than $1,000 by false pretenses.

According to a commitment order filed in Henry County Circuit Court, Portillo was arrested and was released on a $5,000 secured bond.

Court records show he is prohibited from leaving the Commonwealth of Virginia while the case is pending.

A hearing is scheduled for Aug. 11, 2026, in Henry County Circuit Court.

“Be careful when dealing with this individual because family members have told us this is not the first time something like this has happened,” Castillo said. “Situations like this can have a significant impact on a small business. We ultimately had to take out a personal loan to cover the losses and meet our obligations to the bank resulting from the checks that were returned.”
