FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — One person was killed and two others were airlifted following a crash Tuesday on Route 220 South in Franklin County.

A vehicle ran off of the southbound lanes of Route 220 near Crooked Oak Road.

A Virginia State Police trooper at the scene told rbs news now that one person died in the crash and two other people were flown for treatment.

Franklin County Public Safety said the severity of the crash and the number of patients led to a large emergency response from across the county.

Responding agencies included Franklin County Public Safety units from Fork Mountain, Boones Mill, Rocky Mount, Snow Creek and Glade Hill, the Fork Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, Rocky Mount Fire Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin County Animal Control, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries conservation police, and the Virginia Department of Transportation.

“We are grateful for your support during difficult times such as these, and we ask that you keep all of our first responders in your prayers,” public safety said. “Each day we go out and do our best to serve the citizens and visitors of Franklin County. Some days are harder than others, and today happens to be one of those days.”

Virginia State Police is investigating the crash.
