MARTINSVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — A year after 19-year-old Iviyan Dandridge was fatally shot at a house party in Martinsville, no arrests have been made.
The shooting happened in the early morning hours of July 7, 2024, during a large gathering in the 1400 block of Rivermont Heights.
Officers said they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both were taken to the local hospital, where Dandridge, of Martinsville, was pronounced dead.
The second victim was treated and released.
Martinsville Deputy Chief Chad Rhoads said the shooting erupted after a fight broke out at the gathering, which drew an estimated 200 people.
Authorities believe at least two individuals fired weapons, and authorities recovered over 140 pieces of evidence — more than half of which were sent to the state forensic lab for DNA, blood, and ballistics testing.
“It’s a very complicated case,” said Deputy Chief Rhoads. “There were numerous firearms there. There were numerous weapons that were shot. We’ve interviewed 67 people, but number 68 might be the person who pushes this over the finish line and brings some closure.”
The case has involved coordination with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the DEA, and the ATF in an effort to expedite the processing of forensic evidence.
“We’re not going to make a mistake here,” Rhoads said. “When the time’s right, when the evidence is solid enough, the right charges are going to be placed — and we’re confident of that.”
Dandridge had reportedly stopped by the party briefly to retrieve something from a friend before heading home.
A pamphlet shared by her family and friends on social media states she was four months pregnant at the time of her death.
“She wasn’t involved in any altercations there at that party,” Rhoads said. “Several other people had weapons and were firing at one another, and she happened to be in the line of fire. It’s truly a tragedy.”
Authorities said several individuals known to have attended the party have not cooperated, including the other person who was shot.
“If you’ve already been interviewed and remembered something, please come and share it with us; we need your help,” Rhoads added.
